Snow And Would Be Suiciders

So here we are again, a decent fall of snow in the Midlands and the motorists are bent on suicide. Cars driving around covered in snow apart from a windscreen wiper shaped hole on the front screen. Piles of snow on the roof waiting to avalanche over the front window. Headlights and indicator lights covered in 3 inches of snow so that in daylight you can’t see either. Crazy or what?

What Is It With People’s Sub-Standard Parking?

I may not be the best driver in the world, but I like to think I have some consideration for other people. I try to park neatly, giving room for others who are already there, not on bends, blind spots, or across people’s drive. I sometimes feel in a minority.

This morning outside my son’s school on one side of the road are a series of parking bays, long wide (you could get a bus in there and not be on the main carriageway), and yet a number of drivers manage to park with the back or front end of the car sticking out into the road and then watch others cars pulling out to get around them. I don’t understand it, they must have no pride in their car handling skills at all (and probably see themselves as ‘great’ drivers). I think not.

Slight Car Problem

My Skoda developed a wheel wobble over the Christmas period. Had the track rest, wheels balanced etc. It’s better but not fully right. I was thinking of changing it in the Spring, so I might start looking earlier.

Update to this -  Took it to my local friendly mechanic who diagnosed a faulty tyre. Put the spare on and problem sorted, cost £10.

Winter Is Here Again

First day of real frost and there they are. Motorists with a little rectangle of clear glass through which they can see absolutely everything around them??? I thought I had mentioned this before sure enough I’m repeating myself.

I hope they see my son and other children going to school.

Double Points For Excessive Speeding

Good news, but whether it will make any difference only time will tell. At least it sends a message. I know there aren’t degrees of breaking a law, you either do or you don’t, but the punishment should reflect the severity. 55mph in a 30mph zone can hardly be excused by “I thought I was only going at 30mph”

Supermarket Car Park – Near Miss

I was strolling across my local Tesco car park the other day, when a car shot backwards down one of the roadways. The driver braked sharply and then had a shouting match with someone on foot pushing a trolley. The driver then drove off at speed. What she never saw was another person pushing their trolley across the road. The driver, when reversing in anger, only looked over her left shoulder instead of both. The innocent party in all this had a very lucky escape.

Some people seem to think that in car parks the ‘rules of the road’ don’t apply and you can drive however you like. Sensible rules are sensible regardless. If you are too angry to stick to the rules then don’t drive.

Car Parking in Supermarkets

Why can’t people park neatly in supermarket car parks? The car park in our local Tesco is plenty big enough with enough room to manoeuvre and yet people still manage to park across two bays or across the hatched areas (meant for pedestrian safety). I’m talking about able-bodied people, not wheelchair users or Mum’s with pushchairs. It’s sloppy, I just hope their driving abilities are of a better class but I suspect not.

Bad Weather Driving

Here we are again – snow! So what do we do?

Clear the smallest possible area of windscreen to peer through. Leave the side and rear windows full of snow (‘cos we don’t go sideways or backwards too often). Don’t put your lights on so that people are forced to look for you. And of course ingore the fact that snow is slippy and ice more so. Keep the speed up, leave braking to the last moment and then protest your innocence when you hit something.

Is my copy of the Highway Code different from everyone elses?

Big Cars Undriveable?

I’m not if it’s true but the bigger the car the more problems people seem to having driving it. It’s as though the speedo’s are innacurate, the indicators only work intermittently and the headlights are set on maximum dazzle.

There I am minding my own business doing thirty in a thirty zone when up comes this Audi trying to get past. It’s probably my own fault for driving a Skoda. It’s reliable, comfortable, economical, does seventy on the Motorway. What more do I want?
